SA 4x4 crews tackle 'Mission Pink'

LICHTENBURG, North West Province - Round 7 of the 2014 Bridgestone 4x4 Club Challenge, hosted by the Lichtenburg 4x4 Club, saw competitors take on a course set up on old mine dumps near the town.

About 30 4x4s from the North West and Gauteng competed, among them a 1961 Land Rover and 1964 Toyota Land Cruiser, each in near-original condition.

The event also saw the introduction of Bridgestone and Supa Quick’s Pink Valve-Cap Project to the 4x4 Club Challenge. For R50, contestants could purchase a set of pink valve caps, the  proceeds of which would go towards the fight against breast cancer.

SHOWING OFF THEIR "PINKNESS"

There was extra incentive for the crews to get into the pink swing, with a bonus prize for the team displaying the most "pinkness".

Many vehicles were adorned with pink trimmings and crews sported pink hair, fairy wings and even a pink dress worn by a burly North West farmer with an adventurous spirit.

4X4 CHALLENGE

Drivers were tasked with overcoming ten tough off-road obstacles and many scorecards displayed a sparse return after the first five; despite the crews' success at 'Mission Pink' it seemed the overall average on the course would struggle to climb above 50%.

The podium finishers, however, definitely stood out.

The overall winner was the Jeep Wrangler crew of Shaun Niemand and Dominique Cholewka, who scored an astonishing 98 despite the tough conditions, scooping a R10 000 tyre voucher from Bridgestone SA.

In second was the Suzuki SJ Samurai crew of Danie Tait and Wilma Fourie who scored  94% and won a set of Opposite Lock spotlights. In third with 93% was Raymond and Anel Martin, driving a Suzuki Jimny, who won an Opposite Lock snatch-rope kit.

The 'pink prize' was awarded to Henry Barnes and the total amount raised for charity was almost R3000.

HEADED FOR CAPE TOWN

Three Lichtenburg crews booked their places in the final - Wimpie Oliver and Jaco van Zyl (Suzuki Jimny), Johan and Mayke Reichel (Toyota Fortuner) and Johnny Britz from Klerksdorp (Land Rover Defender V8 pick-up). Each will battle for a Conqueror off-road trailer worth R50 000.

The next round of 2014 Bridgestone 4x4 Club Challenge calendar will be hosted by the Jeep Club of South Africa on September 20 in Cape Town. An 11-part TV series documenting each club event will be screened later in 2014 on DSTV’s Ignition channel.
