Norway to SA charity trek

Stan and Sally Hannath from Noordhoek, Cape Town, are about to start a 28 000km journey from Nordkapp, Norway to Cape Agulhas, South Africa to help build the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.

The Cape2Cape4kids epic road expedition will travel though 27 countries from June to October 2013.

FOUR-MONTH JOURNEY

Stan Hannath explained: “Our planned and self-funded overland journey, called Cape2Cape4kids, will take us from NoordKapp in Norway to Cape Agulhas in South Africa. We plan to visit many hospitals and schools along the way to raise awareness for the new children’s hospital in Johannesburg."

The couple will travel through 27 countries behind the wheel of their Volkswagen T5 TDi.

Hannath explains: “What better wheels than a VW T5 Tdi? Yes I know all the 4×4 overlanders are going to tut tut and say you can only go in a Toyota Land Cruiser because all of Africa uses them. Other die-hards may say it has to be a Landie, but honestly I really don’t need to carry out motor repairs to enjoy my travelling.”

"Yep the T5 is kitted out with bed, freezer (ice is essential), fridge, extra batteries and solar panel – not exactly luxurious, but very comfortable thank you. This is my fifth VW bus – what a pleasure,”

The Nelson Mandela Hospital will be one of only five dedicated children’s hospitals in Africa inlcuding the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, Children's Cancer Hospital and Cairo Children's Hospital in Egypt, Gertrudes Garden Children's Hospital in Kenya, CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda.

LOOKING FOR SUPPORT

Currently there are only four hospitals serving 450-million children in Africa - Canada has 23, Australia 19 and Germany 20.

Hannath added: "The fourth United Nations Millennium Development Goal, started in 2000, was to reduce child mortality. We hope to raise sufficient awareness and money through our journey to implement this global goal by building a world-class children’s hospital in the easily accessible city of Johannesburg.”

The team is looking for sponsors to support the Cape2Cape4kids cause by donating money towards the new hospital. All donations will go through donation sites Givengain and Justgiving.
