Nissan's (free) off-road guide

Nissan SA has teamed with off-road driving expert Glyn Demmer to create a 4x4 resource for SA’s off-road community - the Nissan Off-Road Guide series.

What’s more, they're free! A four-part series designed to ensure that "even the most inexperienced 4x4 drivers can enjoy their vehicles off-road".

Demmer said: “As an off-road specialist I've been exposed to many levels of driver competency especially during training sessions where people have bought an extremely capable off-roader but lack the skill and knowledge to make proper use of its off-road technology, safely and responsibly.

"The series covers off-road terminology, tyre care, environmental responsibility and 4x4 recovery. The overall theme of the guide is 'tread with respect'."

TACKLING TOUGH STUFF

The series has been designed to reduce the risk of damage to vehicles and the environment while off-roading. The Terrain Crossing guide teaches correct 4x4 driving procedures, including seating position and how to hold the steering wheel, on some of South Africa’s greatest off-road trails.

Drivers will also be taught how tackle rivers and rocky inclines.

The Recovery section shows the correct way to rescue a stranded vehicle, complete with images and tips.

Demmer said: “The guide may be comprehensive but it is not a replacement for a proper, practical off-road course. There’s nothing like learning in the field but the Nissan Off-Road Guide enables enthusiasts to gain the sort of valuable knowledge which will come in very handy when physically tackling a trail, even with an instructor in the passenger seat.”
