Land Rover: History on Facebook

2012-10-10 08:56

SIX DECADES IN CREATION: Land Rover's Facebook special covers everything from a sketch on a beach to this the latest model.

The story behind Land Rover’s current brand advertising campaign is being presented through Facebook with old and new footage in seven themed sections - it's a fascinating feature.

The information is presented to cover history, engineering, vehicle testing, global expeditions and behind-the-scenes development of the new Range Rover and Range Rover Evoque and takes us from a first rudimentary outline of a vehicle drawn in the sand of a North Wales beach to the advanced technology of the all-new Range Rover.

Land Rover claims a rich heritage that's unique in the automotive world so drew on that history for a cross-media advertising campaign through which it is now giving the public a chance through Facebook to explore the stories and achievements that have inspired it for six decades.

FROM THE START...

The Land Rover page tells the stories behind the brand in a series of dedicated pages with images and direct links to archive and contemporary video clips. Visitors can learn more about how the Land Rover story began, the continuous development of its engineering and design, its global achievements and its status today as one of the world’s best-respected premium automakers.

The sequence begins with 'Conceived on a Beach' and an insight into how Maurice and Spencer Wilks’ post-war vision for a simple, rugged, go-anywhere vehicle was realised and how Land Rover’s early history developed.

The second chapter is dedicated to global expeditions, showing how they have demonstrated the toughness and reliability of Land Rovers. It features footage and reminiscences from the original 1955 Overland Expedition as well as from 2012's Journey of Discovery, in which the one-millionth Discovery recreated the spirit of that first adventure in a marathon fund-raising drive from Birmingham (England) to Beijing – a feat that yielded £1-million for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The focus then moves on to the essential qualities of all Land Rovers, from the earliest vehicles through to today’s highly advanced units. 'Not Driven by Vanity or Fashion' provides insight into the design philosophy, extreme environment testing and product development that eventually puts new Land Rovers in showrooms worldwide - with a special focus on the Range Rover Evoque.

...TO THE PRESENT

The fundamental strength and driving capabilities of Land Rover vehicles have been appreciated by teams working in the world’s most inhospitable regions. 'A Desire to Serve' shows how vehicles can access areas of natural disaster where others cannot. Ice and snow are as much of a challenge as jungles and desert terrain and a film from this year’s Land Rover Experience Nordic Adventure shows just what a Land Rover is capable of in sub-zero conditions.

'Above and Beyond'
brings the Land Rover story right up-to-date with details of the all-new Range Rover and a film which reveals more about the vehicle’s development, from design director Gerry McGovern and the team which produced it.
