Germany is host to a huge range of aftermarket tuning companies which for decades have extracted additional performance from the Fatherland’s finest homegrown automotive products.
The country’s strict TÜV technical inspection body has always ensured that all German aftermarket engine conversions are executed with a suitable level of engineering integrity.
From adding forced induction to BMW V10's and dual-charging Ferrari V8's, the German aftermarket tuning scene offers solutions to nearly every power upgrade eventuality imaginable.
Everything except bakkies. Until now.
This's all changed thanks to the introduction of VW’s Amarok.
OETTINGER BAKKIE?
Renowned tuner Oettinger (recognised by the German federal office for transport as a vehicle manufacturer) has now released an engine control module upgrade for the Amarok’s 2.0 BiTDI engine.
From its base in Friedrichsdorf, Oettinger’s engineers have finessed the operational parameters of the 2.0 BiTDI’s fuelling and boost regime and thereby managed to extract an addition 20kW and 50Nm from the engine.
With the Oettinger kit on board, the Amarok 2.0 BiTDI produces 140kW and 450Nm, trimming the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint time by 0.6sec to 10.5.
Is half a second off the 0-100km/h sprint worth the R10 000 asking price? Well, perhaps the novelty of having an Oettinger-stickered bakkie is all part of the package's fringe appeal.
