Hybrids are becoming increasingly common in South Africa, ranging from mild-hybrid examples to traditional (parallel) hybrids and – to a lesser extent, in terms of local popularity – plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).
As you're undoubtedly aware, the overwhelming majority of hybrid vehicles on the local market today use a mix of petrol and electric power. But what about diesel hybrids?
Well, they're pretty unusual. In fact, we could find just three examples of electrified diesels currently on Mzansi's new vehicle market – and they all launched in South Africa in 2024. In addition, all three use mild-hybrid technology in conjunction with oil-burning engines.
